😜 10 Tricky Job Interview Questions That Drive Job Seekers Crazy

How to understand the real question behind each interview question.

10 Tricky Job Interview Questions That Drive Job Seekers Crazy

This is a guest post by Lynn Tulip.

Bizarre, random, out of the box interview questions may not be politically correct but there’s always some panel member who wants to ask them and they sure need an answer.

Being asked obscure questions along the lines of “You’re a carrot in a salad and a fork is coming towards you. You’re about to be eaten. What do you do?” can actually undermine you. I mean, would you scream? What image does that leave the interviewer with?

So the recruiter/interviewer wants to get to know you better and attempts a gut-feel of how you will fit in culturally and whether you are a likable person.

They think that by asking strange searching questions they will discover how you perform, behave and react in business situations. They are digging deep in the hope that they get a rational, honest and fresh response from you.

However, your answers could be counterproductive.

What do you say?

Are you candid, open and frank?

Do you inject humor and jokes into your answers?

Don’t sabotage your job opportunity. Be prepared.

Always keep in mind what the job interviewer is looking for. Yes, give personal instinctive answers – with the caveat that you understand some of the reasoning behind the question.

Always keep in mind what the job interviewer is looking forClick To Tweet

What does the interviewer want to hear?

Below are some questions that might be fielded, that could bowl you over alongside some ideas about what the rationale is for asking them:

1. If you won $1M today what would you do with it?

How altruistic are you?

What are your values?

Do you have a work ethic?

2. What am I doing wrong as an interviewer?

Can you give constructive valuable feedback?

Without criticizing say what you would you do differently?

3. Who is your role model? Why?

Talk about their personal characteristics and relate them to your own.

adam-cianciarulo-role-model-tweet

4. How does your boss rate as a manager?

Don’t diss your boss, or give a percentage rating.

Rather, discuss qualities like making decisions, empowering the team, providing leadership and influencing others, etc.

5. Why did you choose to wear your outfit today?

Again, this is looking at your values, confidence and respect, motivation.

Talk about corporate image and projection.

6. How do you stack a dishwasher?

How does anyone stack a dishwasher? Think about managing the task, structure and order.

Perhaps don’t mention that your partner always does it.

7. Who in the public eye would you like to punch?

Ok, so you say you are NOT going to punch anyone, but who and what rattles your cage?

Think carefully about how to respond.

Would it be a political advocate whose policies you disagree with? Or perhaps some punk who dresses and performs in an outrageous way?

Either way, you need to show tolerance, understanding and that you value individuals.

8. If you did not have to work, what would you do?

What’s your motivation?

Would you sit around or travel, do volunteer work or care for others?

dess-nichelle-not-have-to-work-tweet

9. What would your last meal be?

So now the question’s a bit personal – are you a gourmand or a gourmet?

A health conscious or a fast-food addict?

There’s no right or wrong answer, think about the culture of the organization you might be working with for synergy.

10. If you could be any car/animal, what would you be?

(In the comments below, James thought this sounds like a call center interview question. I thought that was funny)

“I’d be a red Ferrari as I’m fast, dynamic and can beat others.” Not necessarily the right answer unless you’ve applied for a quick fire competitive position. However, if you are a pussy cat and need to be lion, then you might need to reflect on their qualities to suit the role in question.

elizabeth-sayings-be-a-lion-tweet

Interviewers are looking for hints about your motivation, your skill at dealing with people and your ability to respond when challenged – and of course, how it relates to the job you are applying for. They want to know you will be happy in the role and that others will be content to work with you.

📊 Everything You Need to Know About Pre-Employment Personality Tests

You might think you can't fail personality tests, but recruiters can use them to fail you.

Everything You Need to Know about Pre-Employment Personality Tests

This is a guest post by Jennifer Feldman.

The use of pre-employment personality tests as a screening tool has skyrocketed recently, in part because research has shown there is a correlation between personality fit and employee engagement.

If an employee works in a position that does not match his or her personality, it will cause lower employee engagement. Low employee engagement subsequently leads to lower productivity and higher turnover.

The average cost of replacing a poor hire is estimated at about 1.5 times the cost of that worker’s salary and benefits combined. To keep those costs down, more than ever companies have embraced the idea of pre-employment personality tests.

If you're applying to one of those companies, you need to prepare for their tests. With that in mind,  here are five of the most common pre-employment personality tests.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Free bonus: Download a PDF version of this article to use as a handy reference.

1) The Caliper Profile

irene-giorgakis-reassuring-personality-test-tweet

The Caliper Profile has been used by employers for almost 50 years and is extremely popular.

This test provides information on how personality traits correlate to job performance by using a variety of question types, including true/false and multiple-choice questions. The most common type of question provides you with a series of statements, and your task is to choose which statement best and least aligns with your point of view.

A unique aspect of the Caliper Profile is that it examines both positive and negative qualities, aiming to give employers to get a more well-rounded picture of a candidate.

Here's a sample Caliper Profile report.

Helpful tip

Employers can customize the assessment to specifically measure certain critical behaviors. They will receive a score report that indicates job-fit match or information about how appropriate a candidate’s personality is for a role.

It is important before taking the Caliper Profile to do your research and understand which behaviors are targeted for which roles. Here is a great resource for preparing for the Caliper Profile. It includes practice tests, information about what employers are looking for in candidates, custom feedback based on job level, and information about what to expect on test day.

2) Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

kari-mbti-test-results-tweet

One of the most well-known tools for mapping employee personalities is the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), used by many Fortune 100 companies.

The MBTI identifies if a candidate’s personality leans toward one of two options in each of the following groupings:

  • Extraversion vs. Introversion
  • Intuition vs. Sensing
  • Thinking vs. Feeling
  • Judging vs. Perceiving

An individual can fall into one of 16 personality types.

The MBTI is made up of 93 questions that are presented at a 7th-grade reading level. Every question presents you with two choices—either A or B.

Here's a sample MBTI assessment report.

Helpful Tip

Most candidates have heard of this test, but what you may not know is that, according to CPI (the test’s distributor), the MBTI is not considered ethical to use when hiring or determining job assignments.

Rather, the MBTI is more appropriate as a tool to try and understand how a candidate will perform in a group. It should not be used for determining if an individual is well-suited for a specific position.

Also, the test is not normalized, so scores cannot be easily compared between potential candidates. This is extremely important to keep in mind.

3) The SHL Occupational Personality Questionnaire

The SHL Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ32) has been around for over 30 years. It's used to give companies a picture of how specific behaviors may relate to a candidate’s performance.

The test consists of 104 questions that measure 32 characteristic traits.

Candidates are measured in three primary domains:

  • Relationship with People
  • Thinking Style and Feelings
  • Emotions

On the exam, candidates are presented with four statements, and they must identify which of the statements best and least describes them.

The OPQ32 was developed with relevant and suitable scales for the workplace and has been validated for this purpose.

Here's a sample SHL OPQ32 Candidate's report.

Helpful Tip

The OPQ32 offers employers a custom report with a simple graphical summary of the candidate’s performance. These reports outline strengths and weaknesses in detail, and the normed results can be directly compared to other candidates applying for the position.

To learn more about this test, check out this practice pack, which features practice tests, customized feedback, and study guides.

mimi-lecturers-need-personality-tests-tweet

4) Hogan Personality Inventory

The Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) was introduced in the 1980s and originally given in a socio-analytic context. Currently, the HPI has been adapted and is used as a job performance predictor.

The HPI falls under the category of personality tests based on the Five-Factor Model, testing for “Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism/Emotional Stability, and Openness to Experience.”

The inventory has 206 true/false questions that are to be completed in about 15–20 minutes. The HPI evaluates seven primary scales, six occupational scales and 42 subscales. The six occupational scales measure service orientation, stress, tolerance, reliability, clerical potential, sales potential, and managerial potential.

The HPI is administered online with an instantaneous score report.

The score reports have been normed on more than 500,000 candidates around the world and validated for use in more than 200 different occupations, making the inventory a dependable tool used to evaluate an individual’s temperament and how it matches the demands of the open position.

This is what a sample HPI interpretive report looks like.

Helpful Tip

The HPI score report lets employers know how a potential candidate might act in certain work-related circumstances. It also notes interview style and classifies candidates into categories. With that in mind, pay special care to research about the various interview styles. To become more familiar with the exam, take a look at this Hogan personality test prep pack, which features 266 Hogan–style personality test questions.

5) DiSC Behavior Inventory

The DiSC Behavior Inventory (DiSC) identifies a candidate’s main traits and is based on the four-style behavior model, the oldest of all personality tests; it has been around since around 400 B.C.E., the time of Hippocrates.

Companies use the DiSC as a tool to help recognize a candidate’s professional characteristics and how he or she works as part of a team.

The DiSC personality profile consists of four basic factors:

  • Dominant (D)
  • Influential (i)
  • Steady (S)
  • Compliant (C)

The DiSC is one of the simpler exams, and it is much shorter than other tests, with only about 12 to 30 questions. Candidates are provided with adjectives or short statements and asked to choose which applies to them the most and the least.

One major reason for the DiSC being a common personality test used by many employers is because it is one of the cheapest on the market, typically under $100 dollars per test.

Here's a sample DiSC personality test.

Helpful Tip

The DiSC may be popular but it is considered a temperament measure, not a pre-employment measure. The results of this measure only provide data on the relative strengths of a single candidate. This means employers cannot compare between scores of two competing candidates, similar to the MBTI above.

Also, the DiSC is not considered a valid predictor of job success. Keep this in mind when taking the exam and after getting your results.

What can you do to pass your pre-employment test?

britt-monday-fail-personality-test-tweet

While it's essential to understand what to expect on your job interview day, it's even more important to prepare for pre-employment personality tests in advance.

When deciding on the best preparation method, start by asking your recruiter which test you are going to face, and then match your practice resource accordingly. If the recruiter is unwilling to disclose this information, it is still likely to be available on the Internet.

In general, I recommend using this personality test practice pack based on the Big Five model. This pack is a comprehensive resource that includes practice questions and explanations, analysis of the top fifty traits employers are looking for, personalized feedback based on career level, and a complete guide to personality tests.

Keep in mind that a personality test is a quantifiable way for employers to see if a job is appropriate for you. However, it can also be helpful in ensuring you are not placed in a role that is not suited for you.

At the end of the day, personality tests serve not only to help the employer but also the candidate.

✡ The Smart College Student’s Guide to Israel Internships in 2017

Where to find the best internships in Israel this year.

the smart college students guide to israel internships in 2017

This Guide is dedicated to Keith Berman. May his memory be a blessing.

When I made aliya in 1998, my first stop from the airport was Young Judea‘s Mercaz Hamagshimim (“Achievers' Center”) in Jerusalem.

The Mercaz compound included two dormitories, one for new olim like myself and one for foreign students on one year programs in Israel, and a community center where us residents ran volunteer programs and events mainly for the English-speaking community.

keith bermanKeith Berman founded Mercaz Hamagshimim and was still serving as the Mercaz's director during the first year of my stay. He was someone I went to often for advice and support while I prepared to join the IDF, or when I just felt like chatting.

While researching this article, I was shocked and saddened to discover that Keith tragically passed away in November 2014. He left behind a wife and 3 kids, and a legacy of educating many young adults like myself about Israel and Zionism, including founding Aardvark Israel's gap year study program in Israel (see below) after he left the Mercaz.

To commemorate Keith's work, the Keith Berman AACI Israel Scholarship Fund “was established to assist more young people in participating in the Aardvark Israel Program and other quality long-term programs in Israel.”

Keith made a massive contribution to the Jewish people, and inspired many others to do so as well. Hopefully one of the programs listed here can help you do the same.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

How to use this list

First, signup to download your spreadsheet copy.

Then, read the descriptions below.

While reading, use the spreadsheet to note which programs to apply for, and later, track your progress.

One thing you'll need to keep in mind as you go through the list is that while some of the internships listed below are paid, many have significant fees to cover besides airfare and living expenses.

Even if your parents can help out or you can dip into some of your own savings, it might not be enough. So…

How will you fund your Israel internship?

Here are some ideas on how to pay your way:

  1. Apply for a Masa grant – many of the internships listed here allow you to cover at least part of your fees with a Masa grant
  2. Apply to other funds and scholarships, such as Keith Berman's fund mentioned above
  3. Crowdfund your internship using Gofundme, like Molly and Sophia

Another question I've been asked:

Any internships for non-Jews?

Many of the internships do specifically say they're aimed at Jews, but not all. If you're not Jewish, avoid organizations that specifically mention Judaism or Zionism in their name or internship description.

On to the list…

🌞 How To Quickly Find Student Summer Jobs You’ll Actually Enjoy

Summer job search for people who don't want to.

How To Quickly Find Student Summer Jobs You'll Actually Enjoy

Nobody wants to spend a lot of time looking for a summer job, or any job for that matter.

These are the first steps a summer work seeker should try for fastest results, and I used most of them to find my 10 wacky (& not so wacky) summer jobs.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Free: Download The 50+ Mostly Unusual Places to Find Summer Jobs, a handy checklist to keep track of where you applied for summer jobs.

9 ideas to find student summer job opportunities fast

Starting with the most effective:

1) Ask for your old summer job back

boss rehire tweet

Time needed: the time to make a phone call to your former boss

Why it works: a big part of job search is selling yourself. Avoid having to do that again by going to someone who already knows what you can do (well) for them.

Why it works (2): even if they can't have you back, if your former boss likes you, they're more likely to recommend you to another employer who is looking to hire

2) Work for someone you know

mom offers summer job tweet

Time needed: the time to reach out to them

Why it works: same as above, with the additional benefit that a family member or friend is more likely to want to help you out

3) Ask family and friends if they can refer you internally at their jobs

best friend hired me tweet

Time needed: the time to send a mass email, text, Whatsapp message or other social media post

Why it works: a friend who already has a summer job lined up is usually going to want more friends around, and can easily ask their boss for you

Friends with summer jobs refer friends for summer jobsClick To Tweet

4) Ask family and friends if they know of any openings

Time needed: the time to send a mass email, text, Whatsapp message or other social media post

Why it works: crowdsource summer job leads from the people who like you most and will most want to help you

5) Get family and friends to mention you're available

friend looking summer job tweet

Time needed: the time to post a status update on Facebook about when you can start working, and then to ask everyone to share it

Why it works: your family and friends just need to click once to immediately share your availability, no writing needed since you already wrote the update yourself

6) Scout out your nearest shopping area

Time needed: the time to take a walk

Why it works: it only takes a few hours to check out all the local storefronts for want ads hiring college students now or soon, or even to just ask for a job at the places you actually want to work

7) Contact local businesses that tend to boom in the summer

Time needed: 30-60 minutes to find relevant employers, and then the time to contact them

Why it works: many businesses have seasonal hiring needs, often without any experience necessary, and if you act early enough, your sincerity and good manners alone can get you a job. This is true for high school students too.

To get you started, here's a long list of businesses that boom in the summer.

8) Search for the freshest summer job tweets

Use Twitter Advanced Search.

Turn location on to get local results, and then try searching for:

  • we're hiring summer positions
  • summer job
  • summer job near [where you live]
  • summer intern
  • summer work for us
  • #summer #job

Play around with different variations of these keyword phrases too.

You can also check Twitter accounts that post summer jobs.

Time needed: 1 hour could easily be enough to find and contact a few companies about openings

Why it works: more and more businesses quickly tweet their want ads, and if your timing is good, you could be first in line

9) Google for local jobs

Similar to using Twitter, but you need to take an extra step to find the recent posts.

Try these search queries:

  • “now hiring [where you live]”
  • “summer job [place]”
  • “summer intern [place]”
  • combine them: “summer hiring [place]”

Then, under Search Tools, choose ‘Past week' or ‘Past month' to only get the most recently posted jobs.

Time needed: likewise, 1 hour could easily be enough to find and contact a few companies about openings

Why it works: although you'll be competing with many other summer job seekers using Google, by focusing on the newest local job postings only, you give yourself the best chance of getting your foot in the door before anyone else

Good luck!

📖 What’s The Difference Between CVs, Resumes and Curricula Vitae?

Surprise! You should have all three.

What’s The Difference Between CVs Resumes and Curricula Vitae

In the US and Canada, it’s a resume.

In Europe and Israel, it’s a CV.

In reality, no matter where you live, you should have both and a curriculum vitae.

Wait. What?

Let’s start with the fun part.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

The definitions

According to Wikipedia:

Résumé

“also spelled resumé or resume,[1] is a document used by persons to present their backgrounds and skills. Résumés can be used for a variety of reasons, but most often they are used to secure new employment.[2] A typical résumé contains a summary of relevant job experience and education.”

CV or Curriculum Vitae

“provides an overview of a person’s experience and other qualifications. In some countries, a CV is typically the first item that a potential employer encounters regarding the job seeker and is typically used to screen applicants, often followed by an interview, when seeking employment.”

At a glance, CV = resume.

However, this second Wikipedia entry goes on to explain that in some places and industries, a curriculum vitae is a much longer and more complete document of your life with emphasis on your career, saying that “curriculum vitae…  can be loosely translated as [the] course of [my] life.

So CV = resume, but a curriculum vitae is something else.

CV = resume, but a curriculum vitae is something elseClick To Tweet

Your curriculum vitae contains your work and educational history, while your resume or CV should only mention your most impressive, relevant moments.

This is a concept that you can benefit from regardless of your place or industry.

Here’s how:

Use your curriculum vitae as a base document from which you excerpt your resume (or CV, depending on where you’re job searching).

Here’s why:

3 Reasons you need a Curriculum Vitae

poet resume cartoon

1. Track record

Maintaining your curriculum vitae as you advance through your career forces you to keep track of your accomplishments, failures and lessons in one centralized location.

It’s also best to do this regularly while memories are fresh and you still have access to the people, computers and materials you might need to record everything properly.

That said, even if you wait until your next job search to update your curriculum vitae, that’s still ok because it will force you to look back and refresh your memory about past work that may be discussed in your next job interview.

2. CV/Resume facilitation

By maintaining your curriculum vitae, you’re maintaining a place to select, copy & paste from when writing your resume, making an updated resume easier and quicker to compile, especially when you need to do it each time you target a different company.

3. Work portfolio

By making resume writing easier, your curriculum vitae also makes it easier to quickly build a work portfolio, since you already know which projects to include: the ones mentioned in your resume.

So whether you call it a resume or a CV, use your full curriculum vitae to make your resume the hard-hitting, impressive personal sales document that it needs to be.

😨 9 Scary Reasons Overqualified Job Seekers are Rejected

If you’ve ever been told you’re overqualified, this is for you.

9 Real Reasons Overqualified Job Seekers are Rejected

Being rejected is never fun.

Being rejected for a job you wanted is not even close to being fun.

But being rejected for a job you wanted because they said you’re overqualified is a special kind of aggravation. You can clearly do the job, and you’re available, and willing, and yet… and yet… yet they still don’t want you.

Why?

As it turns out, there are many reasons why. Annoyingly but also fortunately, they don’t usually have anything to do with you.

Here are real reasons why employers are so quick to pull out the ‘overqualified’ rejection.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Free bonus: The Midlife Job Search Report is a handy guide I compiled for older job seekers. Download it now.

‘It’s not you, it’s me’: 9 Reasons to Reject You

1. Employer concern about being able to pay you ‘fairly’

reasons overqualified job seekers are rejected tweet

Before starting a recruitment process, employers usually know roughly how much they can afford to pay the new hire. Having more experience and skills than other candidates, employers recognize that you bring more value and are perceived as needing higher pay even if your salary requirements haven’t even been discussed yet in interviews.

If that perceived higher salary is higher than their budget for the position, ‘you’re overqualified.’

2. Employer concern about being able to keep you long enough

You’ll leave as soon as a better opportunity comes along, because “you have so many options” with your extra skills and experience compared to other candidates. Recruitment is expensive, so employers want the most return on their investment.

If employers think you’ll get recruited elsewhere sooner than later, ‘you’re overqualified.’

3. Employer concern you’ll be unwilling to do tasks ‘beneath you’

“You might be willing to do whatever the job requires, but if you’ve held equivalent or higher positions in the past, maybe there are some tasks you just won’t touch because you see your time as too valuable…” thinks a hiring manager who often themselves is unwilling to do tasks ‘beneath them.’

If employers think there’s any aspect of the job you might not do, ‘you’re overqualified.’

4. Employer concern you’ll be bored

Suppose you really are willing to do whatever the job requires. Who’s to say that you won’t ultimately find the job too easy and unchallenging, going sour and bringing down the mood at work and your colleagues with it?

If employers think you’ll get bored quickly, ‘you’re overqualified.’

If employers think you’ll get bored quickly, ‘you’re overqualified.’Click To Tweet

5. Employer concern about younger people managing older people

If your potential boss is younger, especially if they’re much younger, they might be anxious about how you’d respond to their authority. It doesn’t even matter how old you are, or if you’ve even been in a similar situation before.

If employers think your relationship with their younger manager might be a problem, ‘you’re overqualified.’

6. Manager views you as a potential internal competitor

Many bosses and managers are insecure in their roles, regardless of whether they merit them or not. But when along comes a candidate like you who might deserve their role even more – even if that’s not the job you’re currently being considered for – their forward-looking inferiority complex will push them to push you far, far away.

A job seeker once related this:

… I’ve had 2 interviews – 1 with a guy who told me I was overqualified (because he wasn’t comfortable when I asked why they were doing everything manually instead of creating a database and queries to process hundreds of applications per day) and the other offered me the job before the end of the day

If a potential boss sees you as a future threat, ‘you’re overqualified.’

7. Recruiter laziness

There’s a lot you can say in a job interview to allay frankly all of the above concerns, but only if recruiters take the time to express them to you and give you a chance to respond. The reality is that for an overwhelmed, tired or lazy recruiter, it’s just so much easier to dismiss you out of hand than to bother.

8. Recruiter excuses for other reasons they can’t or won’t give you

reasons overqualified job seekers are rejected tweet 2

In Why Recruiters Lie When Rejecting You, the Recruiting Animal says:

No recruiter gives substantial feedback. We can’t. If you’re missing specific skills and someone else has them we can tell you that because it is a matter of fact. But we can’t tell you that the hiring manager doesn’t like you because you look a bit frumpy or because you’re a drip.

And there are a lot of reasons why (over)qualified candidates can be rejected or even discriminated against: poor cultural fit, bad interviews, etc., but if you qualify for one of those, it’s just easier to say you’re overqualified.

9. Recruiter manipulation

You never had a chance, even before you came through the door. The recruiter already knows who they want to hire, but an interview quota needed to be filled. Your overqualified resume made you easy to spot as a candidate who could help fill that quota and ‘legitimately’ be rejected without raising any eyebrows from superiors.

The sad truth about being overqualified

The ‘overqualified’ rejection is usually avoidable.

The reality is that if you get rejected this way, it’s almost always because you applied for the wrong job.

Had you done your homework, you could have applied to a company that had a history of hiring people like you, and would have been much less likely to give you that ‘overqualified’ label.

Had you done your homework, you would have valued your qualities more accurately and instead been able to find an employer who does the same.

Getting a job doesn’t mean you need to compromise dramatically.

The good news

In a response to a question about startups on Quora, entrepreneur Nicholas Chavez responded:

My first mentor who had many millions of dollars taught me three valuable lessons that are applicable here:

  1. In life you don’t get what you deserve.  You get what you negotiate.
  2. Hire every overqualified mother%#$&@% you can find.
  3. If someone asks for more than you intended to pay, simply tell them “I’d love to pay you ($200k)!  Can you walk me through the model that will help me do that?

Put differently- for the startup founders employers smart enough to recognize it and willing to take you seriously, ‘overqualified’ really means ‘qualified plus benefits.’

You just need to do your homework and find them.
