What is Moz and Do You Need it?

Is it possible to provide too much value?

love-o-meter Thank you to Moz for sponsoring the 8th Annual JobMob Guest Blogging Contest.

Moz’s slogan is “Inbound marketing is complicated. Moz’s software makes it easy.”

And it’s true.

Here are some of the tools available, and if you have a website, you should be impressed:

  • Open Site Explorer – Research and compare backlinks with competitors for intelligent, targeted link building. Identify top pages, view social activity data, and analyze anchor text.

  • Followerwonk – Take a deep dive into your Twitter analytics. Analyze and segment your followers, compare users, and find out how to engage your audience.

  • MozBar – View link metrics, analyze page elements and SERP results, and access your favorite SEO tools in-line while you browse the web. For Chrome and Firefox.

  • Moz Local – Check your U.S. business listings on Google+ Local and other prominent local search engines—then see how you can improve them.

  • MozCast – Track day-to-day changes and fluctuations in Google rankings. MozCast is your daily “weather report” showing turbulence in the Google algorithm.

I use the first 3 tools regularly.

Then there are the terrific reports:

And those are just the FREE tools.

Their paid plans give you:

  • Detailed marketing analytics for campaigns you create, including a new Landing Pages report they recently announced

  • More powerful tools such as Fresh Web Explorer, Rank Tracker, On-Page Grader, Crawl Test and more

  • Wildly appreciated customer support (according to the Moz Love-O-Meter above)

So do you need Moz?

If you have a website, almost certainly. Especially if search traffic is a main traffic driver to it or like most people, you want it to be. Moz simply provides so much value that few others can. And this is regardless of whether your website is for business or personal branding.

But should you get Moz Pro?

That depends.

I did the free trial and I recommend that you do too.

There are lots of tutorials, basic and advanced, and all are easy to follow, on how to get the most out of the Pro-level resources. However, I just couldn’t make the time necessary to really take advantage and my assistant has other responsibilities as well.

-> Plan at least a full day to get started, and then another day 2 weeks later.

I came away with the impression that when my business grows enough to add another member to my team, leveraging tools such as Moz Pro would be one of the first things I would want them to be doing. There’s no question that those tools in the hands of the right person could be game-changing. I’m just not there right now (although, while writing this, I got the idea to try finding an seo freelancer who has a Moz Pro account and knows how to use it).

That said, if SEO & inbound marketing is absolutely critical to your business – which sounds like a strange thing to say, since it’s probably critical for any online business – and you’re NOT using Moz Pro, you must do the free trial to see what you’ve been missing out on.

If you have done the free trial, what do you think of Moz? Otherwise, come back later to share how the trial went.
