Job Summary:

Would you like to practice your public speaking skills? As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service, you deliver interpretive programs to educate visitors. You independently present a variety of talks and briefings and respond to visitor questions. Your presentations are generally short and concern park orientation and visitor safety. You explain the area's natural, cultural and/or historic resources, recreational opportunities, concession facilities and services, availability of campgrounds and hiking trails. You provide information on current park events, projects, and policies, as well as updates on issues affecting the natural, historical and/or cultural preservation of the area. Park guides work in or near the park visitor center or visitor contact station, and at auditoriums, campgrounds, trails, or in the field. Other duties may include visitor services such as traffic control, back-country patrols, and administrative tasks. The Seasonal Recruitment Operations Center is currently accepting applications to fill up to 2 temporary positions at Big Bend National Park, Texas . Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. Appointments may be terminated at any time and can be extended if workload and funding allow. Anticipated Entry on Duty: October 2012 Area Information: Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert with varied scenery and diversity of plant and animal life. The park community consists of 250 people, including employees of the NPS, Concession, Border Patrol, Postal Service, School, and their families. A state-accredited elementary school (K-8) is located at Panther Junction. The park has a post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, and lodge. Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting. An active employee/community association sponsors social events throughout the year. Elevation at Panther Junction is 3,800 feet. The climate is generally pleasant with hot summers (90-100 degrees F.) and mild winters (30-50 degrees F.). Terlingua (a small town 24 miles away) has a state-accredited high school (no bus service), lodging, restaurants, hardware store, small grocery and gift stores, churches and a bank. Lajitas (47 miles away) has limited shopping, a medical clinic, lodging, restaurants, golf course and churches. Alpine, Texas (100 miles away) has most necessities, including supermarkets, a variety of stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, a movie theater, and a university. The nearest larger cities are Midland/Odessa (225 miles) and El Paso (325 miles).
