Our National Wildlife Refuge System is among the world's most significant land and water systems managers for the benefit of fish, wildlife, and plants and encompasses more than 96 million acres and 78,000 square miles of waters. Our Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Conservation program helps safeguard fisheries worth billions of dollars, conserves at-risk species, and provides recreational opportunities. The Service's role in administering the Endangered Species Act enables us to accomplish conservation actions with the goal of recovering threatened and endangered species; and through our role in migratory bird management, we promote the long-term conservation of migratory bird populations while providing opportunities for the public to study, use, and enjoy migratory birds. The Fish and Wildlife Service employs world-class scientists and other professionals who are also addressing climate change, the greatest environmental and conservation challenge of the 21 st Century; as well as facilitating renewable energy development.
