Job Summary:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, manages the Baldrige Program. NIST has a 100-plus-year track record of serving U.S. industry, science, and the public with the mission to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. NIST carries out its mission in three cooperative programs, including the Baldrige Program. The other two are the NIST laboratories, conducting research that advances the nations technology infrastructure and is needed by U.S. industry to continually improve products and services; and the Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership, a nationwide network of local centers offering technical and business assistance to small manufacturers. The Baldrige Performance Excellence Program (BPEP) is responsible for the development and management of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the only Presidential Award for organizational performance excellence. This Award, established under the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Improvement Act of 1987 (P.L. 100-107) is an award open to U.S. businesses, education, health care, and non-profit organizations. The purpose of the Program is threefold: (1) to identify and recognize excellence through the Award; (2) to promote awareness of a systems approach to organizational performance management and assessment; and (3) to publicize and share successful organizational performance strategies. Under the provisions of P.L. 100-107, the Program is based upon demanding Criteria, Award evaluations are carried out by a volunteer, expert workforce, and funding for the Program may come from Congressional appropriations, private contributions, and fees. The management of the Program, staffing the Boards, and funding, all require regular contact at the highest levels senior executives of major U.S. corporations, health care, education, nonprofit and governmental entities.
