Job Summary:
Who May Apply: All U.S. citizens in the local commuting area of Johnston, IA that are current students in good academic standing pursuing a full 2-year course of study or more, on a full or half-time basis, in an accredited college or university leading to an associate's, or higher, degree with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology that relates to the position and/or includes at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses in the following: engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. About the Position: This position is for an Engineering Technician internship under the Pathways Internship Program as a Student Trainee (Engineering). This is an excepted service appointment. Developmental Position: This position may be filled at the GS-0899-02 level or GS-0899-03 level. At the GS-099-02 grade level, you will work under closer supervision and in a developmental capacity performing assignments and completing training, both of which are aimed in preparing you to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform duties of the next higher/target duties at full performance GS-0099-03 intern level. Although not guaranteed, if filled at the GS-0899-02 level, there is noncompetitive promotional potential to the GS-0099-03. Pathways Internship Program: The Pathways Internship Program is for current students and individuals accepted for enrollment in a qualifying educational program. It replaces the existing Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). The Internship Program provides students enrolled in a variety of educational institutions with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school. Veterans' preference applies to selection for positions in the Pathways Programs. Interns may work full-time or part-time schedules. Interns may be eligible for noncompetitive conversion to a term or permanent position in the competitive service within 120 days of successful completion of the program. However, service in the Pathways Program confers no right to further employment. Location: Located just 6 miles north of Iowa's capital city of Des Moines, suburban Johnston offers a wealth of recreational facilities, numerous parks and trails, excellent educational system, responsive government, new business development, and an excellent quality of life.
