WHO MAY BE CONSIDERED: Student Program Eligibles Located in a rural forested area, Catoctin Mountain Park contains the first catch and release stream in the nation and has an average visitation of about 700,000 visitors. There is one campground and three cabin camps located within the park. Several nearby communities combine high quality educational and medical facilities with a small town atmosphere. Washington, DC and Baltimore are each less than two hours away and other cultural/recreational areas are available within a one hour drive. This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. What are the Eligibility Requirements? In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program: you must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the institution (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); and enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved home school; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2 or 4 year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum; and students must be in good academic standing according to their institution. You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program. This position is established to provide meaningful work and to expose the student to the duties of a Park Ranger (Protection). The employment opportunity may involve specific administrative tasks/work assignments and a variety of activities and assignments, and working with technical and professional staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience. This is a temporary summer appointment not to exceed 1 year (anticipated entrance on duty date is May 2013). This appointment may be extended until the incumbents education program requirements have been completed (as long as the incumbent continues to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program), at which time the individual may, at the Agency's discretion, be converted to a term or permanent appointment. There is no guarantee for conversion. Management may select at any of the grade levels announced. The hourly salary range for the GS-05 grade level is $16.33 to $21.22. The hourly salary range for the GS-07 grade level is $20.22 to $26.29. Temporary housing is available. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring agility and dexterity. Duties involve performing physically rigorous assignments, often in isolated outdoor environments while exposed to sever weather conditions. Physical fitness requirements must be met prior to and on a continuing basis during employment. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties require extended periods of outdoor work where the incumbent will be exposed to severe weather conditions including temperatures well below freezing to in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Emergency service and law enforcement work requires entry into hazardous environments, exposure to dangerous persons, animals, and substances, and potential exposure to infectious diseases.
