About the Position: This is an interdisciplinary position which may be filled under any of the following titles and occupational series, depending on the qualifications of the applicant and needs of the agency: Geographer, GS-0150 Biologist, GS-0401 General Engineer, GS-0801 Physical Scientist, GS-1301 Hydrologist, GS-1315 Cartographer, GS-1370 Land Surveyor, GS-1373 The position is located in Charleston, SC, a historic city that is a well-known tourist destination with many cultural, educational and entertainment opportunities. Surrounding areas offer good opportunities for recreation and are noted for abundant fish and wildlife. The Charleston area is one of the best places to live in the nation. The metropolitan area is comprised of Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties, and stretches some 50 miles inland, with 90 miles of oceanfront. In addition, arts, recreational and cultural opportunities are abundant. Charleston was just voted number 1 tourist destination in America from readers of the widely read Conde Nast Traveler. http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2011/oct/11/charleston-named-top-tourist-stop/ The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has maintained Charleston Harbor for more than 130 years and has dredged it every year during that time to ensure the channel is at the required Federal project depth, removing 2-3 million cubic yards of maintenance material from the harbor floor each year. Currently, the Charleston District is in the process of conducting a feasibility study for deepening Charleston Harbor, known as the Post 45 project. The district will determine if it is both economically beneficial and environmentally acceptable to the nation to deepen the harbor in preparation of the new Post-Panamax ships being built around the world. The Charleston District operates the St. Stephen Powerhouse, producing 84 megawatts of power - enough to supply the energy needs for 30,000 homes. As part of this project, the Charleston District designed and constructed the state of South Carolina's only fish lift, which provides safe passage for fish migrating upstream to spawn. The Charleston District also provides a variety of services through regulatory permits, civil works, military construction and international and interagency support. Beyond these duties, the Charleston District stands ready to respond to natural disasters and deploys several employees each year in support of Overseas Contingency Operations in Afghanistan.
